My jaw almost dropped when i saw what Sam Van Aken had done.
He has made grafting into an artform and grafted 40 different stone fruits onto ONE single tree.
He calls it the “Tree of 40 Fruits” and is grafted using a method called “Chip Grafting” and it’s done by taking a sliver of one of the trees that includes the bud and insert it into a cut in the grafting tree, tape it, let it heal and hope that it grows.
It WILL take several years to complete a tree with 40 different type of fruit, but even if you are interested in grafting, it’s still very satisfying to have a grafted tree with 3 or more types of fruit on it to.
The Tree of 40 Fruit is an ongoing series of hybridized fruit trees by contemporary artist Sam Van Aken. Each unique Tree of 40 Fruit grows over forty different types of stone fruit including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and almonds.
